What each part of your roof edge does, the warning signs of damage and when to repair or replace.
Eavestroughs, soffit and fascia don’t get much attention, but they do a big job. Together they move water away from your roof and foundation, keep the roof edge dry and let your attic breathe. When one of them fails, the damage often shows up somewhere else: a wet basement, rotten roof boards or ice dams along the eaves. Here is what each part does and when eavestrough repair or replacement makes sense for homes in the GTA.
Quick guide: eavestroughs collect rainwater, downspouts carry it away from the house, fascia is the board the eavestroughs attach to, and soffit is the vented panel under the roof overhang that lets air into the attic.
They catch water running off the roof. Without them, water pours straight down beside the foundation and splashes back onto siding, windows and doors.
Downspouts carry water from the eavestroughs to the ground. They should discharge well away from the foundation, never right beside it.
Fascia is the trim board along the roof edge. It supports the eavestroughs and protects the ends of the rafters. Aluminum fascia cladding keeps the wood behind it dry and needs very little maintenance.
Soffit covers the underside of the roof overhang. Vented soffit lets fresh air into the attic, which keeps the roof deck cold in winter and helps prevent ice dams and condensation.
Blocked or sagging eavestroughs hold water and ice at the edge of the roof. In freezing weather that ice can back up under the shingles and leak into the house. Blocked soffit vents make the problem worse by trapping warm air in the attic. Cleaning and repairing these parts in the fall is one of the cheapest ways to protect your roof. See our full fall roof checklist for more.
A loose hanger, a leaking corner or a short sagging section can usually be repaired. If the eavestroughs leak in many places, are badly dented or are pulling the fascia off with them, new seamless eavestroughs are often the better investment. Rotten fascia wood should be replaced before new aluminum is installed over it.
Roofing Pros installs and repairs eavestroughs, downspouts, soffit, fascia and aluminum siding. See our eavestrough, soffit, fascia and siding services. If the roof edge itself is damaged, we can handle the roof repair at the same time. Doing both together saves time and keeps the whole roof edge watertight.
Gutter guards reduce how often you need to clean the eavestroughs, especially under trees. They still need occasional checking, and the right type depends on your roof and the trees around your home.
Yes. When they overflow or freeze, water can back up under the first rows of shingles and behind the fascia. Read the signs of a roof leak to know what to look for.
Most homeowners match the eavestroughs to the fascia and soffit, and choose a colour that works with the roof and windows. Aluminum comes in many standard colours.
